Helderberg
Nature Reserve
:
The
Helderberg Nature Reserve is one of the Helderberg's greatest treasures.
It starts at the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains, where families'
picnic in the shade of ancient oaks amidst rolling lawns, and reaches
up the mountainside to places where hardy fynbos plants cling to
the steep slopes. The land that now forms the nature reserve was
acquired in 1947 from the estate known as Land-en-Zeezicht for the
conservation of the town's water supply. The Rotary Club of Somerset
West subsequently approached the Somerset West Town Council to establish
a wild flower garden and raised funds for this purpose. In 1960
this area was proclaimed a nature reserve.
There
are various parties involved in the upkeep and management of this
reserve and recently a group of dedicated volunteers calling themselves
Friends of the Helderberg Nature Reserve became much involved in
the upgrading and development of the reserve.
An
educational centre, funded by the Friends of the Helderberg Nature
Reserve and the Helderberg Municipality, is well utilised by local
schools and organisations in the important task of educating both
adults and children about conservation.
Birds
are abundant in the reserve and over the years some 169 species
have been recorded.
Several
species of antelope occur in the reserve and visitors may be privileged
to spot Grey Duiker, Grysbok and Steenbok. Bontebok has also been
reintroduced.
Vegetation
in the reserve is distributed according to soil types, with Mesic
Mountain Fynbos making up the greater part of the plant life.
